Tong Myeong Bul-weon -- Korean Buddhist Temple in Pusan, Korea

Korean Buddhist Resources for English Speakers

First and foremost, it is recommended that anyone interested in Korean Buddhism get a copy of the very informative and concise pamphlet, Korean Buddhist Temple Tour Book,  published in Seoul by the Lotus Lantern International Buddhist Center.  This very useful booklet can be ordered by telephone at (02) 735-5347 for about 3,000 Won.

Robert E. Buswell, Jr., professor of East Asian Studies at U.C.L.A., spent five years as a Korean Zen Buddhist monk and writes engagingly and with the authority of someone who actually lived the life of a Korean  Monk in his book, The Zen Monastic Experience (Princeton  University Press 1992).

Another fine book is The Teaching of Buddha, often called the "Buddhist Bible."  A dual-language book with English on one page and Korean on the facing page, it is published in Korea by Hyeon-am Sa.  The Korean name for this book is Bul-gyo Seong-jeon  and it costs about 15,000 Won.

Finally, for a concise overview of Buddhism in general, it's difficult to do much better than Hans Schumann's Buddhism: an Outline of its Teaching and Schools, published by Quest Books.
