Other Attractions in Nam Gu

Nam Gu, the bustling cultural and shipping precinct of Busan has much to offer the intrepid traveler who makes his way down here. Five or Six Islands (O-ryook Do) . Depending on the tides, there are either five or six islands here. Take any bus into Yong-ho Dong as far as it will take you. From here you will need to get a taxi to the fishing village just off the coast from O-ryook Do -- tell the cabbie you want to go to O-ryook Do. Then catch the shuttle boat that leaves about every 20 or so minutes. Busan Cultural Center (Pu-san Mun-hwa Hui- |
gwan) is the home of the Busan Philharmonic and venue for many other cultural exhibitions throughout the year. Busan Municipal Museum ("Bu-san Shi Rip-pak Mul-gwan"). Primarily concentrating on Korean historical artifacts, this museum often hosts interesting traveling exhibitions. The UN Cemetery (Yu-en Myu-ji) and the UN Memorial at the UN Rotary. The cemetery is the only one of its kind in the world. A poignant memorial to the men from around the world who struggled to hold off the Communist juggernaut in the early 1950's. |
For Trekkers:
|
Nam Gu has much to offer hikers -- Hwang-ryeong San, the massive 427 meter peak in Dae-yeon Dong, overlooking Nam Gu and Seo-myeon. Here you will find one of the sites of the old signal fires used in ancient times to communicate from one end of the Korean peninsula to the other. Though gentler, Pong-o-ri San is still a challenging and very scenic undeveloped mountain overlooking Tong Myeong Bul-weon. From its peaks the hiker is afforded a great view of Busan Harbor and Yeong Do (Yeong Island). The best access is go out the main gate form Tong Myeong Bul-weon and across the street. Then turn left about 59 meters until the wall ends and pick up the trail there. Jang San (Long Mountain) in Yong-ho Dong, bears the same name as the Abbot of Tong Myeon Bul-weon. It has a great view of the East Sea, from the Five - Six Islands all the way up to Hae-un-dae Beach. From Tong Myeong Bul-weon, walk down into Yong-ho Dong, staying on this street until it becomes a mountain trail. |
Shin-seon-dae Park (Playground of the Gods) Not quite a mountain, but still worthy of the trek is the undeveloped spit of land on the very southern tip of Nam Gu. From the main gate of Tong Myeong Bul-weon, turn right and head downhill toward Yong-dang Dong. At the first "T" intersection -- a flashing red light -- turn left. This will lead you past a very dusty and very busy gravel pit. Take the next left and the road gets much less dusty. Follow this road way on up to the recycling plant at the switchback. At this point turn right, onto the trail leading up the hill. After a while on this trail you will reach a turn in the road. Here you will find a small pavilion and a couple of portable toilets and a sign briefly explaining this "Playground of the Gods." Take the path toward the peak on your right and you will be rewarded with a spectacular view of Bu-san Man (Busan Harbor), Yeong Do, T'ae-jeong-dae Park and O-ryook Do. |
